The Lunch Bunch: 2019

The CBC Class of 1958 has maintained a tradition of meeting for a monthly lunch at 11:30am on the second Tuesday of each month. Our current venue is Mike Duffy's Pub & Grill, 124 W Jefferson Ave #104, Kirkwood.

Our December, 2019 Lunch

Jim Mittino, says: "We had a great lunch today. Deacon Tim gave us a beautiful homily about Advent, and then led us through our prayer intentions.

Terry O'Brien gave the report on Valerie's Christmas gift. She will enjoy a fine dinner with her husband at the best Italian restaurant in Kirkwood: Sapore. And she also got applause and appreciation from us for the fine service and attention she gives us, and we also gave her a lot of spending money. But being the Angel she is, she did not forget us either: Val and her young daughter made Christmas cookies (from scratch last night) for us which were really tasty and specially decorated.

We all signed Christmas cards for Jack Krater up in Wisconsin, and also our regular local druggist, Pete Zimmerman who is still under the weather. Couple of other regular lunch bunchers were not in town and sent their Christmas wishes, which we returned. I think we had around 20 of us today.

Thanks to Jim Vogelsang, we all also signed five (5) specially-created Christmas Cards and sent them to five soon-to-be-surprised classmates. Their names remain secret for now.

"We Did It". As another surprise, I was able to announce to the guys that as of today, $31,695.00 cash in hand has been received for the Tom Maher Scholarship. That means Tom's Scholarship is now an enduring self-sustaining CBC scholarship that can begin to assist in the education of "Men For Tomorrow—Brothers For Life'. There is also approximately $1,600 in outstanding pledges so far. We've done what we set out to do. Can I respectfully suggest that we keep in mind the continual demands on our school to keep providing faith-filled education to young men. So if you feel now or feel in the future you want to continue adding to the Tom Maher Scholarship—please follow your ideals."

The Lunch Bunch: October, 2019

The October, 2019 Lunch was a busy, successful gathering. Plans were finalized for the Memorial Lunch scheduled for November, an update given on the Tom Maher Scholarship Fund Drive, and Geri Furi, visiting from Detroit, gave an online tour of the Class of 1958 website. The Lunch ended with a Birthday cedlebration for the month's Birthday Boys, Gary Hach and Jim Mittino.

Charlie and our very own Georgia Peach, Frank Windler, enjoying the calm before the storm.
  • IMG_6489.jpeg
Might Frank be the long-lost O'Brien triplet?
  • IMG_6493.jpeg
Art has just announced that Valerie will be bringing in a special Velveeta-based dessert for the occasion. Bob and Charlie rightfully appear cautious.
  • IMG_6496.jpeg
John and even Denny look apprehensive as Valerie brings out what appear to be steaming bowls of deep-fried Velveeta Tacos larded with more frozen Velveeta for dessert, with a topping of sprinkled toasted Velveeta.
  • IMG_6492.jpeg
Frank and Tim appear anticipatory as Valerie brings itheir dessert but John Rabbitt is not so easily taken in,
  • IMG_6483.jpeg
Otto, Jim Volgelsang and Jim Doerr stand amazed (appalled?) at Art's latest creation.
  • IMG_6495.jpeg
Gary and Jeff have no sympathy for those who were so easily taken in by Art's attempts at peddling yet more Velveeta.
  • IMG_6482.jpeg
Art Repovich is helping support Jim Mittino, who is temporarily ataggered at the excess of Velveeta, , while John Layton charitably looks resigned to it.
  • IMG_6499.jpeg
Jim and Frank are two happy campers: they wisely ordered the Cannoli insated.
  • IMG_6479.jpeg
Farnk Pellegrini lends Gary Hach some support, because Gary (who, like Frank, stuck to Cannoli for dessert) is finishing his fourth Bacardi with Coke, and is feeling no pain..
  • IMG_6503.jpeg
Deacon Tim leads the group in a prayer, beseeching relief for all who partook of Art's creation.
  • IMG_6506.jpeg
Joe Gunn wisely excuses himself from what appears to be turning into a digestive disaster.
  • IMG_6654.jpeg
Later, after the Pepto-Bismol has been liberally quaffed, Terry and Valerie pose for their traditional end-of-lunch portrai, but who is that mischievous interloper making vaguely Voodo-like gestures?
  • Sept_Group.jpeg
Back Row: Pellegrini, Doerr, Vogelsang, Alcorn, Windler, Galkowski, Hahn, Repovich, Dolan, Rabbitt, Mittino, Monfort, Tumminello, O’Brien.
Front Row: Etzel, Reinhart, Layton, Hach, Wiener, May, Doyle.

The Lunch Bunch: August, 2019

  • El_Jefe.jpeg
Jim Mittino opens the Lunch by announcing that when all is over, the Class will give the patrons at Duffys something to remember: the Brothers will join in a Conga line and march out into the parking lot performing the Hokey Pokey, which he now proceeds to demonstrate.
  • Hahn_Monfort.jpeg
Hahn and Monfort think this is a grand idea!
  • Hahn_Monfort2.jpg
But then Charlie asks, "Are you sure this will be covered by Medicare in case things go awry?" while Bob looks as if he is having second thoughts as well.
  • Hahn_Rabbitt_Monfort.jpg
John joins them, and opines that if it was done with some dignity, it couldn't be all that bad.
  • Deacon_Smythe_Etzel.jpeg
Meanwhile, Deacon Tim asks Dick if he, Art and Otto remembered to bring the Door Prize.
  • KK2.jpg
Dick explains he has a bottle left over from the 50th Anniversary, but Otto and Art ares supposed to contribute as well. Fortunately, Art has brought a slice of Velveeta and is handing it to Otto.
  • Korner_Krew.jpg
Otto wraps it carefully in a napkin for linclusion in the Prize bag he has brought.
  • Smythe_Etzel_Shake.jpg
Otto and Dick shake on the deal. Mission accomplished!
  • Rep_Mittino.jpg
Either Art has just told Jim about his contribution to the Door Prize, or perhaps they are reprising together "We Are the Lollipop Kids" from the old St. Joe's Academy producution of "The Wizard of Ooze" back in 1956.
  • Hobart_Rabbitt.jpg
Meanwhile, John has just written Denny a demerit slip for having too good a time.
  • Pellegrini_Hobart.jpg
Denny asks Frank for some legal advice. Frank sympathizes, bu after all, John IS the Cadet Colonel.
  • Hobart_May.jpg
John is able to restore Denny's good spirits by reminding him that there is no Penalty Detail anymore since the School moved to the new Campus. In the background, Valerie grabs Dick to get ready fior the Door Prize Award Ceremony.
  • Layton_amid_Dennys.jpeg
Layton and Reinhart feel that this should help bring Hobart to full closure over his grievance. After all, they can't dig Brother Peter up to adjudicate it anymore.
  • Steiert.jpeg
Bob is looking very dapper and pleased to be at the gathering. Little does he suspect. . . .
  • Mittino_Steiert.jpg
Bob seems to be thinking, "You know, this might be worth travelling all the way from KC today just to see this!"
  • Mittino_Steiert_ArtR.jpg
When Art explains his contribution to the Door Prize, Bob looks a little less certain, while Jim wears his "Oh, well, sh*t happens" expression.
  • Sideways.jpg
Frank Terry and Jim are returning to the table for the Door Prize Award Ceremony.
  • Zimm_Dolan.jpg
Pete tells Deacon Tim that, at this, point, a quick, quiet prayer may help salvage the day.
  • Zimm_V_Deacon_Art_Pellegrini.jpg
As the principals move into place, Frank can be seen trying to persuade Art that he could have come up with a less, er, "cheesey" contribution.
  • Mittino_Camera.jpeg
Mittino prepares to record the moment for Class and posterity,
  • Smythe_Pellegrini_Vogelsang.jpg
And the Door Prize goes to. . . . .Jim Vogelsang!
  • Same3_plus_Terry.jpg
Terry joins the unholy three; after all, he usually is taking the pictures, and not in them.
  • Jim_Val.jpg
Super Server Valerie give Jim a sympathetic hug.
  • Reinhart_Layton_Mittino.jpg
Reinhart and Layton join Mittino for a "What was that alll about?" moment
  • Mont_Zimm.jpeg
Charlie and Pete find the whole thing vastly amusing
  • Hahn_Monfort_Zimm_Rabbitt_Deac.jpeg
The entire Hahn-Monfort-Zimmerman-Rabbitt-Dolan wing looks stunned by these developments
  • May_Art.jpeg
John has a "I can't believe you really did that!" look, while Art finds it all pretty funny.
  • Mittino_May.jpg
Jim and John figure "There's always a next time!"
  • Pellegrini_Vogelsang.jpeg
Frank looks pleased at making the best of a dicey situation, while Jim maintains his unflaggingly pleasant demeanor even in the face of such an event.
  • Rabbitt_Deac.jpeg
John belongs to the "clean plate" club, but Deacon Tim has saved a little bit to help fuel his homily for next Sunday.
  • Terry_Val.jpg
And it wouldn't be a genuine Lunch Bunch occasion without the obligatory Valerie & Terry shot
  • Unholy_Trinity_Mittino_V_Reinh.jpg
Jim signals that it's almost time for the Group Photo and formation of the Hokey Pokey line.

Back Row: O’Brien, Smythe, May, Hach, Wiener, Zimmerman, Monfort, Dolan, Vogelsang, Mittino.
  • 1.jpg
Even our Super Server is struggling to maintain her balance, so dazzling is Deacon Tim's shirt-and-lei color combo!
  • 10.jpg
Deacon Tim is about to demonstrate the proper technique for performing "Aloha Oe!"
  • 11.jpg
Mittino appears staggered by Tim's attempts at simultaneously singing and performing a hula. Consigliere Pellegrini appears genially unimpressed.
  • 12.jpg
Not to be outdone by the Deacon, Terry shows what a REAL clash of color looks like!
  • 13.jpg
And now Deacon Tim plays his ace-in-the-hole. . .
  • 14.jpg
Terry's response is to pose with the American flag carefully displayed to add yet further credence (and color clash)
  • 2.jpg
Pete and Jeff are tickled pink to have such good sense, and not strike fatuous poses like their Brethren.
  • 3.jpg
Dick and Charlie wonder what the world is coming to, when grown men ham it up so much at the slightest provocation. Perhaps a touch of Brother Michael's "Roscoe" is needed to restore order?
  • 4.jpg
Tony, on the other hand, seems to be saying "Eat your hearts out, brothers—behold, the true epitome of restrained sartorial elegance and taste!
  • 5.jpg
John is holding up a specimen bottle, while Jim and Den agree that a picture is indeed worth a thousand words.
  • 6.jpg
Reinhart maintains his patient, "suffering fools gladly" attitude, while Hobart clearly thinks it's all such a gas!
  • 7.jpg
Dick is glad he had the good sense to wear a sensible shirt, while Gary is attempting to sell him an inside tip that the time is really ripe to buy more Boeing stock, and that he can perhaps find a little to offload to him.
  • 8.jpg
Jim and John proudly display their heritage copy of Life magazine, which was all they had to amuse themselves with before Hugh Hefner brought out Playboy (though they freely admit the articles in Playboy never matched the quality of those in Life)
  • 9.jpg
Mittino KNOWS that he knows, while Jim can only suspect. . .

The Lunch Bunch: June, 2019

The Lunch Bunch: May, 2019

  • IMG_5819.jpeg
Jim opens the Business portion of the Lunch by going over the Agenda, until he comes to an item that might be classified as an "Oh sh*t" moment. . .
  • IMG_5812.jpeg
Vogelsang to May: "Brace yourself, Brother—Art told me privately he has an electrifying announcement to make. "
  • IMG_5813.jpeg
Hach is chortling, because *he* alreadys knows, while Reinhart maintains an uneasy calm. . .
  • IMG_5814.jpeg
Art announces that scientists in his garage, er, lab, have discovered that crumbled Velveeta, properly aged, can be compressed into a tablet that is at least as effective as brand-name ED nostrums. . .(at this, Denny looks nonplussed)
  • IMG_5815.jpeg
While John steps up to proudly announce that he will be working with Art to market the new product as "Niagra" while Denny thinks, "You may have a little trademark problem there, Brother.")
  • IMG_5816.jpeg
John Rabbitt looks mildly skeptical, because he's heard this before, whilst Otto adds "You sure you don't want to market it as 'Niagra Falls' and be done with it?"
  • IMG_5817.jpeg
Despite Charlie's attempts to sell him a share in the product, Dick is simply glad to have reached a level of maturity when such trivialities no longer are of paramount concern
  • IMG_5818.jpeg
Valerie congratulates Jeff and Jim for not being fooled by such quackery (although Jeff was already having second thoughts)
  • IMG_5826.jpeg
After agreeing to shoot publicity layouts, Terry joins John whilst Hach who demonstrates the logo for their product, in his own inimitable way.
  • IMG_5821.jpeg
May and Tumminello are vastly amused, caught up in a deja vui moment, remembering how Hach and company were caught by Big A doing the same thing one fine morning when Guidon pcitures were being shot. . . .
  • IMG_5823.jpeg
Upon reflection, Charlie, John and Jeff are beginning to wonder if they've been rpoed into another one of Art's ACME Enterprise schemes
  • Group.jpg

The Lunch Bunch: March, 2019

  • Mar 1 a.jpg
Jim and Frank are always up for a good time!
  • Mar 2 a.jpg
Special note to Kathy: Terry is also in another pgoto, but not with Toim. . .
  • Mar 4 a.jpg
John Rabbitt is really laying it on the line to a chastened Dick, while John Layton tries to intereceded with an adamand John R.: so much for the two former St. Ann GS classmates!
  • Mar 10 a.jpg
Frank is pointing a serious finger at someone, while Dick laughs at a chagrined John 's earlier attempts to admonish him.
  • Mar 8 a.jpg
John is pondering his next move against Dick, who has decided to pay him no attention. Denny seems to be afflclicted with an odd paralysis of the hand, while Otto wishes he had remembered to bring his glasses.
  • Mar 9 a.jpg
the best photo yet of Gary; if only he'd move the cover just a leetle bit to his right. . . .
  • Mar 6 a.jpg
This is a unique pphoto!!! Den and Gary are actually paying attention to somebody, and not cutting up! OMG!!!
  • Mar 5 a.jpg
Meanwhile, Art has utterly no idea what John is about to lay on him: John is consulting a worried Pete concerning Velveeta's shrinkage of "certain body parts", before he tactfully passes on the word to Art.
  • Mar 12 a.jpg
Frank is snesibly checking in with Smiley (aka Julie), while Gary is caught in a dilemma over which fork to use.
  • Mar 13 a.jpg
Now all Hell breaks loose! Charlie is handing a demeerit slip to Frank for the conspiracy documented earlier, while Tom is sneaking away. Off the left, Gary is pondering which fork to use. On the right, John is simply laying out the facts concerning Velveeta's shrinkinge effects to a now-worried Art. Pete, as a retired pharmacist, can lend credence to the story.
  • Mar 11 a.jpg
Jim is making a point concerning a theological question he had been discussing with Deacon Tim, who is trying to make some sense out of Jim's mutterings. Art, Pete and John are still engaged in discussing Velveeta's shrinkage powers.
  • Mar 14 a.jpg
Tom and John are about to come to (chuckle) blows over who possesses the rights to the chair in question.

  • 11.jpg
Art is bravely showing the effect of his consuming Velveeta for so many years has had on his left hand (he keeps the right one hidden, as it is just too gnarly). Charlie now realizes that it was a mistake to sit next to Art and be required to feed him. . .

Dick is happy just to be noticed, while Den is enjoying his sammywich, he's hoping that Carla and his cardiologist do not see this photo, especially the deep-fried onion rings!
