2021 Lunches and Zoom Meetings

The CBC Class of 1958 has maintained a tradition of meeting for a monthly lunch at 11:30am on the second Tuesday of each month. Our current venue is Mike Duffy's Pub & Grill, 124 W Jefferson Ave #104, Kirkwood. While Pandemic restrictions prevail, we meet via Zoom instead.

Those present: Hank Deeken, Deacon Tim Dolan, Geri Furi, Gary Hach, Bob Hahn, Pete Kenny, Jim Mittino, Terry O'Brien, Tim O'Brien, Art Repoovich, Rich Schwan, Bob Steiert and Jeff Wiener.

Zoom participants (Thanks to Bob Steiert for the screen captures): H. Deeken, G. Furi, P. Kenny, Tim O'Brien, R. Steiert and Jeff Wiener. (At Duffy's—Thanks to Terry O'Brien for the pictures: T. Dolan, D. Doyle, O. Etzel, G. Hach, J. Layton, J. Mittino, R. Muth, Terry O'Brien, A. Repovich, D. Reinhart. and A. Tumminello)

We were able to display the Zoom participants from across the country on the large TV screen at Duffy's and, thanks to Terry's phone, feature all the in-person attendees one by one with the Zoom participants on their screens. Gary Hach's Chromebook enabled the Zoom viewers to see the banquet room too.

Our Information Technology Team is working feverishly to connect the Zoom attendees with the Duffy's crowd. Gary is encouraging them, urging "Faster! Faster!"
  • 2103zm Dolan.png
And the first of the Zoom Peanut Gallery shots—Tim Dolan appears from Duffy' via Terry's phone on the Zoom, together with all the remote Zoomers, and a shot of Art and Denny and the table are via Gary's Chromebook as well!

And, having completed that, sits down to enjoy his lunch. Note the crossed utensils—proof his prayer was efficacious.

And now Dick Doyle is added to the Zoom Gallery!
  • Doyle_Mittino.jpg
Having greeted and seated Doyle, Jim rushes off to welcome another new arrival:
  • jm_Layton.jpg
Layton has arrived—what more can Jim say (of course, this is before John began quaffing his jumbo Guinness. . .) .
  • 2103zm Layton .png
And now it is John's turn.
  • Mittino_and_Muth_Returns.jpg
A grand surprise—Rich Muth has arrived! Rich is wondering "Who the hell are all these old geezers?"
  • Mittino_Muth_1.jpg
Jim thinks about Rich: "Long time no see!" as Bar-Timaeus said to Jesus.
  • Muth_Mittino2.jpg
With Rich at his right and Dick at his left, Jim enjoys the corner seat.
  • 2103zm Muth.png
And now Rich joins the Zoom Gallery!
  • Tim_Art.jpg
Art asks Tim if he should shave off his Velveeta-induced chin shrub to mark the start of Spring.

Everyone on the Zoom remarks on Art's facial foliage.
  • Hach_Art_1.jpg
Gary opines that Art may want to start Spring afresh, too. Besides, it might turn green if he doesn't.

Now Gary joins the Zoom Gallery.

Otto is very pleased that we can again safely enjoy in-person lunching at Duffy's.

  • Denny_Tumminello_2.jpg
Tony, too, is enjoying the repast, but Denny (after observing Hach and Art) strikes an eloquent "Lord, give me strength!" look.
  • 2103zm Reinhdt.png

No one can make a grander entrance than Denny! He is demonstrating his new walking staff to Mittino—note the warning stripes, which also serve as a measuring rod for the depth of the BS on the floor.

Behold! our very own Lazarus, Gary Hach, home from the hospital and as impish as ever!

The bill is presented to Gary, who looks at it in disbelief, even as Art thanks him for the great meal.
  • petemay.jpg
Pete and John are a little glum after realizing that no, Gary will NOT pick up their tab.
  • wienermay.jpg
Jeff and John look at one another in disbelief that they, too, are stuck with their own tab.
  • terryval.jpg
Terry and Valerie signal the end to another great gathering!
  • maymittvrr.jpg
Meanwhile, May, Mittino, Vogelsang, Rabbitt and Repovich have quietly exited to the parking lot, so the remaining few can argue over who will pay the tab and tip.

The Lunch Bunch—May, 2021

The CBC HS Class of 1958 gathered for its monthly Lunch on Tuesday, May 11 both in-person at Duffy's and from across the country via Zoom. In-person were: Etzel, Mittino, Monfort, Muth, Terry O'Brien, Rabbitt, Repovich, Rinehart, Tumminello, and Vogelsang, while Furi (MI), Perry (FL,) Steiert (MO), and Schwan (TN) attended via Zoom.

First, since the big-screen connection at Duffy's wasn't working, we'll feature all the Zoomers—note Bob Steirt's classy virtual bacground. Ken Perry actually IS in Florida, but he doesn't make any big deal of it! In the upper left corner is the image of Duffy's picked up by Jim's Kindle.
  • 2105 Mittino.png
Terry O'Brien uses his phone camera to take pictures of Duffy's attendees. This one features our fearless leader, Mittno, who is looking particularly commanding.
  • 2105 Monfort.png
Terry O'Brien's phone now features Charlie Monfort for our delectation.
  • 2105 OBrienTerry.png
And now Himself—Terry O'Brien—appears in a cameo on his own phone with the Zoomers.
  • 2105 Steiert.png
Bob Steiert just couldn't help contrasting his sunny background with the cold interior at Duffy's, just to rub things in a bit.
  • 2105 Steiertb.png
And then Bob flips the image because he could.
  • IMG_8176.jpeg
And now, Order of the Day! Otto contemplates his choices, whilst Charlie looks to heaven for inspiration.
  • IMG_8177.jpeg
Lending a touch of class, the Three Wise Men (Art, Jim and Frank) pose together.
  • IMG_8178.jpeg
Col. Rabbitt ventures a skeptical look, asking the waitress "What do you mean, you're out of fried scrambled calves' brains? I was really looking forward to some classic Missouri cuisine!"
  • IMG_8179.jpeg
After struggling unsuccessfully to connect his Kindle to the TV, Charlie observes to Jim, "As a holder of a PhD in Physics, I gotta agree with Arthur C. Clarke: Any sufficiently advanced form of technology is indistinguishable from magic! "
  • IMG_8180.jpeg
In this longer shot, we sese the traditional U-shaped table arrangement is back—a good sign that the Pandemic must be waning.
  • IMG_8181.jpeg
Meanwhile, Art mutters encouraging words to Valerie, who is apparently succeeding in hooking up the TV to the Kindle.
  • IMG_8182.jpeg
Jim extends a cordial welcome to Muth, who looks a little uncertain about whether he will really have to wash dishes at the end of the meal as Jim casually mentions he is a little short of funds at the moment.
  • IMG_8183.jpeg
Muth relays this to Pellegrini and Vogelsang, who appear appropriately concerned as well.
  • IMG_8185.jpeg
A jubilant Art announces some limited success with the TV
  • IMG_8187.jpeg
A heartwarming portrait of Denny, Capo de tutti Capo, with his faithful Consigliere, Frank.
  • IMG_8188.jpeg
Meanwhile Jim congratulates Tony, telling him that it is now his turn to spring for the Lunch.
  • IMG_8189.jpeg
Muth, Pellegrini and Vogelsang agree this is an elegant solution to a perennial problem, and will save them the trouble of having to slink out to the parking lot to avoid kitchen duty this time.
  • IMG_8190.jpeg
Jim takes pity, and tells Charlie the good news he has just learned.
  • IMG_8191.jpeg
Jim announces that Gary Hach's daughter, Risa, is picking up the tab for the enrtire Class lunch today.
  • IMG_8193.jpeg
Terry put it well: "It was Risa's way of thanking us for being Gary's friend all these years. We should be thanking her for all the joy her dad has brought to our group. He will be greatly missed by all."
  • IMG_8195.jpeg
A nice, new touch is a series of closer shots of Class members in small groups: first, John Rabbitt and Art Repovich.
  • IMG_8196.jpeg
Denny, replete with a good lunch, is momentarily resting his eyes. Meanwhile, Charlie and the two Jims search for something which will gently rouse him, while John philosophically observes that this indeed brings back memories of Brother Daniel's Plain Geometry class.
  • IMG_8197.jpeg
From the other side, Frank, Tony, Rich and Otto look bemused at how this will play out.
  • IMG_8198.jpeg
Finally, it's agreed that Valerie should gently relieve him of his fearsome Shillelagh and then softly shake him; the assembled multitude await Sleeping Beauty's rousig with some trepidation.
  • IMG_8202.jpeg
It worked! Now everybody can pose for the group picture with eyes wide open.
  • IMG_8203.jpeg
    A fine Terry & Val end-of-the-Lunch picture!
  • IMG_8204.jpeg
But wait! Jim is so overcome with gratitude that he just has to give Val his, er, personal thanks as well.
