Dec. 15: We Remember—We Rejoice, and We Give Back
Each December 15 is set aside to be a day for celebrating the gift of our classmates: remembering those departed, (especially those who have passed in 2020) rejoicing in the company of those who are still with us, and taking the occasion to give back by providing for future cadets who need our help.
Returning the Gift
The Class of 1958 has three currently-funded scholarships:
- The Brother Aloysius Dolan, FSC Scholarship Fund
- The Class of 1958 Scholarship Fund
- The Tom Maher Scholarship fund
All three Scholarships are self-sustaining, and so we are part of a growing financial support system to assist many deserving young men at CBCHS and their families.
If you are able, select the Scholarship of your choice, and then:
- Make the check out to CBCHS
- On the Memo line of the check, write the name of the Fund(s) you wish to support.
- Here's the address:

June 2020
On Thursday, June 11 15 member of the CBC Class of 1958 met virtually using ZOOM technology—neither Covid-19 sheltering-in-place nor distance could stop us! Classmates from Missouri, Kansas, Florida, DC, Tennessee, Texas, Oregon and Michigan enjoyed each other's virtual presence. Note particularly Jim Mittino's clever use of a "virtual background" which saves him hours of tidying up his room to be presentable online!
May 2020
May was a busy month, despite the restrictions imposed during the Covid-19 pandemic. Our class held TWO meetings utilizing ZOOM, the web conferencing software, after our first successful virtual gathering April 28. The first Zoom session was in lieu of the regular Duffy's Lunch on May 12, and the second 10 days later, on May 22. Attendees are listed below each screen shot.

The Lunch Bunch—April, 2020
Not even the Coronavirus can stop the Class of 1958 from gathering—albeit virtually. April 28 was the occasion for a virtual gathering via Zoom web-conferencing. A dozen classmates participated. Below are two screen shots of the session:
The Lunch Bunch—March, 2020
- secret.gif
The March Lunch Bunch gathering centered about—no, NOT the upcoming St. Patrick's Day celebration—but a secret shared by some (but not all) attendees.
- 2Franks.jpeg
Here are the two Franks: Frank P. emphatically knows; Frank Windler, newly-arrived from Rome (GA) may not know.
- 2Jims.jpeg
Seeing Double—2 Jims! Jim Mittino is definitely in the know, but Vogelsang appears to be clue less.
- 2Jims_Pellegini.jpeg
Mittino appears to be looking for the answer on his phone to show Vogelsang (or is he just texting his bookie?)
- Baking_Machine600.jpg
Clue: Not many know that Charlie Monfort is a retired Emeritus Professor of Physics at SLU, but he brought this invention of his to the Lunch with a specific purpose in mind.
- Charlie_Frank1.jpeg
Charlie introduces Frank W. to his creation. At first, Frank doesn't quite get it.
- Charlie_Frank2.jpeg
Understanding dawns!
- Deacon_Charlie.jpeg
Deacon Tim congratulates Charlie on his foresight, while Charlie enjoys an "Aw, shucks!" moment.
- Deacon_Otto.jpeg
Tim shares the news with Otto, who looks equally pleased.
- enny_Frank_Denny_Otto.jpeg
In the "snowcap" corner, all appear equally mystified at the purpose of the device, although Frank is busily sending Julie a message about it.
- Charlie_Rabbitt.jpeg
Charlie just let John Rabbitt in on the secret, and John looks pleased as punch.
- Rabbitt-Hach.jpeg
John is about to spill the beans to Hach, but Mittino (off to the right) reminds him of Ben Franklin's adage, "Three can keep a secret if two of them are dead!"
- Rabbitt_Hach_Mittino.jpeg
A little crestfallen, John agrees. Hach will be kept in the dark for now.
- 2Jims_Frank_Art_Tony.jpeg
With a rumbling roar, Charlie' invention revs up, as the assembled Cadets watch with a mix of trepidation, amusement and expectation.
- Group1.jpeg
Some bow their heads in prayer, but Jim V. is delighted—he has figured out what is happening!
- Hach_Reinhart.jpg
Hach and Reinhart share a "WTF" moment, as the purpose for all this fooforall is revealed!
- The_Secret_Is.gif
And the secret is. . .
- The_Cake.jpeg
Voila! A triumph of technology and baking wizardry!
- Deaon_Jim_M.jpeg
Tim is attempting to get Jim to sign a birthday card for Denny, but Jim is still engrossed with his phone—perhaps he is trying to reason with his bookie not to send Vito by with his aluminum Slugger to collect Jim's kneecap?
- Dolan_Art_Rabbitt_Signing.jpeg
A little more success with Art and John in signing the card!
- Group2.jpeg
Finally, Mittino puts his phone down and goes over to beg Art for a loan so he can placate Vito, who is on the way.
- Denny_and_Cake.jpeg
The surprised Birthday Boy and his cake!
- Deacon_Frank_Cake.jpeg
The feeding frenzy has begun.
- Hobart)Etzel.jpeg
Denny and Otto appear delighted at how things have turned out.
- JimV_Art.jpeg
Jim Vogelsang tells Art "Actually, I knew what was going to happen all along. I just didn't want to spoil the surpise!"
- Layton_Hach.jpeg
Gary and John aver that things always go better with. . . .
- Pellegini_Repovich.jpeg
Franks observes "You know, you can never predict what's going to happen at these Lunches!"
- Everybody.jpeg
Front row, L-R: Denny Reinhart, Gary Hach (in a patriotic moment), Denny Hobart, Otto Etzel and Terry O'Brien
Back row, L-R: Frank Pellegrini, Art Repovich, Tony Tumminello, Jim Mittino, John Layton, John Rabbitt, Tim DOlan and Charlie Monfort - Exeunt_Otto.jpeg
Otto exits, dapper as ever.
- Pellegini_JimV.jpeg
Frank Pellegini and Jim Vogelsang take their leave
- Art_Valerie_Hach.jpeg
Art and Gary attempt to steal the limelight with Valerie from Terry
- Terry_Valerie.jpeg
But Terry has the last laugh!
The Lunch Bunch—February, 2020
- IMG_7253.jpeg
Deacon Tim opens our February Lunch with a brief Call to Prayer.
- IMG_7251.jpeg
A glad sight—Pete is back among the Lunch Bunch, and Jeff, too! Hopefully our Prayer Circle is achieving some good.
- IMG_7258.jpeg
So good to see both Pete and Jeff again. Denny is celebrating the 65th anniversary of when Brother Paschal (inaccurately) foretold his future, which he gleefully reposted on the front of his shirt.
- IMG_7243.jpeg
Are these the same Three Musketeers who appeared in Bro. Peter's Office, called to explain why Brother Paschal barred them from the Library?
- IMG_7248.jpeg
Charilie, Jim and Tim congratulate Tony on his svelte appearance, although Jim did ask Tony if he kept a picture in his attic that aged out of sight. . .
- IMG_7260.jpeg
"Chipper" is the best caption for these two!
- IMG_7245.jpeg
Deacon Tim and Charlie—the Calm Before The Storm.
- IMG_7247.jpeg
Frank tells Gary, "Yes, this time you may shake my hand, but in the future I expect you to kiss it, and address me with more respect as Don Francisco!" Jim V., Art and Denny appear appropriately chagrined at this breach of etiquette on Gary's part.
- IMG_7249.jpeg
Art opines that Gary ought to be given at least two demerits for his disrespect of Frank, but Denny notices Gary's contrite demeanor and suggests Frank cut him a break.
- IMG_7250.jpeg
Frank ponders this suggestion, and graciously accedes.
- IMG_7255.jpeg
Art and Frank both look quite happy at this outcome.
- IMG_7246.jpeg
Denny and Jim also look pleased at this deft handling of an awkward situation.
- IMG_7254.jpeg
Jim M. and Jim V. share a good chuckle—"That was a close one!"
- IMG_7256.jpeg
Denny is very happy to have Gary back as his corner man. Gary also is quite pleased: he's bounced back from his recent surgery, and escaped Frank's wrath, but unwisely cracks "I'm not afraid of him! After all, I'M the one who made Brother Conrad live up to his nickname, "Blinky"!".
- IMG_7257.jpeg
John can hardly believe his ears! Does Gary actually have a death wish?
- IMG_7252.jpeg
Valeriecheerfully takes Gary's order: "Mr. Hach, the Don would like to know whether you would prefer cremation or interment in a casket (Hopefully post-mortem)?"
- IMG_7259.jpeg
Charlie also reacts with disbelief to Gary's rash remark, while John ponders how much time on the Penalty Detail Gary will have to serve for it—if he lives that long.
- IMG_7261.jpeg
Charlie and Deacon Tim wisely head to the Men's room to wait out the storm.
- IMG_7262.jpeg
Gary quietly sidles past Franks's table, having thought better of his bravado.
- IMG_7266.jpeg
Jeff prudently calls for a MedeVac to come on standby forGary, , just in case.
- IMG_7267.jpeg
Jim countermands the order, after Deacon Tim urges fraternal tolerance and calm.
- IMG_7265.jpeg
Amity restored, Jim exuberantly tries to horn in on the obligatory T-V shot, and share some of the limnelight.
- IMG_7263.jpeg
Front Row: Hach, May, O'Brien, Reinhart, Zimmerman and Wiener.
Back Row: Pellegrini, Repovich, Hobart, Mittino, Vogelsang, Dolan, Tuminello, Layton and Rabbitt.
The Lunch Bunch—January, 2020
- Deacon_Group.jpeg
Deacon Tim prayerfully opens what everyone thought would be a typical Lunch at Duffy's.
- opening.gif
Little did he know. . . (Note Mittino standing threateningly against the back wall in case Tim or anyone else should leave early).
- 4Brothers.jpeg
Brother Paul Meyer, FSC from CBCHS was our special guest for Lunch—he lives in the Brothers' House at CBCHS. The 2 Jims seem very happy, but John Rabbitt is ecstatic to once more be in the presence of a Brother.
- 4Duffy.jpeg
John looks a little less happy now because Duffy's owner has joined this group to ask who would be paying for the damages caused by the Olde Cadets' Hokey-Pokey line last summer.
- Bro_between_Dennys.jpeg
Brother Paul demonstrates to Denny Hobart the way to tell the difference between a salad fork and a dinner fork, and when to use which—something every gentleman from CBC ought to remember for proper table etiquette. Terry thinks this is hilarious.
- Bro_Frank_Deacon.jpeg
Meanwhile, Frank and Deacon Tim amble over and are astounded to hear Brother Paul Meyer casually mention that he has carefully read over all of Brother Peter's notes about them from their Cadet years in preparation for this event.
- Denny_BRo.jpeg
The lesson on etiquette concluded, Brother Paul Meyer and Denny anxiously await the salad course, to see if Denny can now demonstrate his newly-acquired finesse at table.
- Frank_Art_Gary.jpeg
By this time, the unholy Trinity (Frank, Art and Gary) are growing a little restive, anticipating the imminent arrival of their food.
- Art_Gary.jpeg
Gary attempts to display Art's new Class of 1958 hoodie; Gary has donned his glasses to better read the motto on the back, while Art sits with an expression of profound disappointment at Gary's misguided efforts.
- 2Jims_Frank_Art.jpeg
Mittino couldn't resist getting a picture of that, while Jim Vogelsang leans close to get a better look. Frank calmly explains to Art that he should't allow Gary to get under his skin.
- Denny_Otto_Tim.jpeg
Meanwhile Otto and Deacon Tim sidle over to congratulate Denny on his newly-acquired knowledge of impeccable table manners. This was too much for Brother Paul Meyer, who briefly leaves to recoup his calm.
- Gary_The_Dennys.jpeg
At this point, Gary has definitely become bored, and tells Reinhart and Hobart that he has a good mind to liven up things for just a bit.
- Hach_and_the_Dennys.jpeg
Reinhart advises Gary against this rash idea, but Hobart looks intrigued.
- Hach_Starts_Food_Gith.jpeg
So Gary picks up a something—dinner roll? a piece of sushi?—rears back that good pitching arm, and he lets fly. . .right through the room divider panel at the table of Kiwanians in the adjoining room. It bounces off the head of the Kiwanis Secretary who, thinking it came from the Rotary Club at the next table, flings a pickle at the Rotarians, and they're off to the races!
- food_fight3.jpg
- Otto_May_Rabbitt_Hahn.jpeg
Meanwhile, Otto, John May, John Rabbitt and Bob Hahn look on with some incredulity at this interruption of their peaceful repast.
- JimV_Frank.jpeg
Vogelsang and Pellegrini also appear to be interested in this change from regular Class table routine.
- Otto_Bro_May.jpeg
Otto and John beseech Brother Paul Meyer to step in an restore order—surely he had experience with this sort of thing in the CBCHS cafeteria! Brother gently but firmly closes the divider curtain on the melee next door, and relative calm is restored.
- Smythe_Otto_May.jpeg
Dick observes that every once in a while we did have the beginnings of such a brouhaha in the old CBC cafeteria, but Brother Al would always step in and crack a few heads together.
- Valerie_Terry_Smythe_Otto.jpeg
Valerie comments, "Blessed are the peacemakers....", while Otto looks embarrassed.
- Bob_and_Tony.jpeg
Bob appears appalled, but Tony really seems to be enjoying himself.
- 2Dennys.jpeg
Reinhart says, "Jeez, I really didn't think Hach had it in him!", but Hobart opines that this was one of the best Lunches ever—"it sure wasn't dull!"
- Deacon_BobH.jpeg
Deacon Tim and Bob Hahn prepare to make a hasty exit before Duffy's Management figures out just what actually happened and presents the Class with another bill for damages.
- Dick_Jim_Otto.jpeg
Order having been restored next door, Jim poses with Dick and Otto; everyone seems relieved that quiet once again reigns.
- Frank_Jim.jpeg
Frank assures Jim that he will represent the Class of 1958 should it be necessary once the Kiwanians, Rotarians and Duffy's Management unravel what really happened.
- Tim_John.jpeg
Tim and John are beaming at how order has been restored and amity has prevailed.
- Valerie_Dennis.jpeg
Terry , happily, gets to pose with Valerie yet again. "Eat your hearts out, my brothers!"
- Grou_January.jpeg
